In a significant move to bolster regional economic growth, Malaysia and Thailand have agreed to construct a second bridge connecting their territories. This initiative underscores the commitment of both nations to strengthen economic cooperation and infrastructure development, as stated by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced this at a press conference on August 3, following his visit to Rantau Panjang in Malaysia and Su-ngai Golok in Thailand. During his visit, he met with Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin to discuss various collaborative projects.

Both countries have agreed to prioritize the advancement of several key projects that have faced delays for many years. The construction of the second bridge is a major part of this initiative.

According to Prime Minister Anwar, the bridge project is slated to begin construction in April next year and is expected to take two years to complete. However, he expressed optimism that the timeline could be shortened without compromising quality.

In addition to the bridge construction, Malaysia plans to launch development projects in the surrounding areas to create business opportunities. These projects will include the establishment of stalls, small shops, and enhanced commercial spaces around the bridge area. This strategy aims to ensure that the bridge not only serves as a vital connection but also stimulates local businesses in Kelantan and Narathiwat.

Upon completion of the second bridge, the existing bridge, which has linked the two countries since 1971, will undergo upgrades to improve its functionality and capacity, Anwar added.

This collaborative effort between Malaysia and Thailand highlights their dedication to fostering economic growth and enhancing connectivity in the region.
